Also known as fructose(果糖),fruit sugar is a simple sugar that is found in many different kinds of ripe fruits. This sugar is extremely sweet and is often used in the preparation of commercial food products.

  ●Basic origins

Along with being found in a number of fruits, fruit sugar is also present in honey and a select number of vegetables such as onions and sweet potatoes.

  ●Main features

Considered to be the sweetest of all the naturally occurring sugars, fruit sugar is a favorite with food manufacturers for two reasons. First, this natural sweetener is less expensive than refined sugar products, making it more cost effective. At the same time, sugar from fruit is so sweet that smaller amounts are required in order to achieve the same level of sweetness in a given recipe.

  ●Side effects

While it is true this natural sugar tends to be sweeter than refined(加工的) sugars, it is important to note that fruit sugar is no less dangerous for people who are diabetic (患糖尿病的). However, it will still cause blood sugar level to increase. In some people, the rapid increase in levels is even more pronounced than with refined sugars.

Parents should be aware that too much apple or pear juice could create health issues for their children. Because both types of juice are high in fruit sugar that is classified as free fructose, less of the sugar is absorbed into the small intestine (肠). The result of this action can lead to the development of diarrhea(腹泻).

Adults who frequently have diarrhea may also want to monitor their selection of food items each day. The problems may be the result of consuming too much commercially prepared foods containing fruit sugar.

  21. Compared to other forms of sugar, fruit sugar is .

  A. less useful

  B. less healthy

  C. much sweeter

  D. more expensive

  22. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Paragraph 4 mean?

  A. Spoken.

  B. Clear.

  C. Controllable.

  D. Unimportant.

  23. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?

  A. The advantages of fruit sugar.

  B. How fruit sugar can control diabetes.

  C. Why fruit sugar is used in prepared foods.

  D. The results of taking in too much fruit sugar.

  24. In which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken from?

As a teacher we all have those memories of students—we wonder if we were able to teach or reach those students who had a need to get out of their seats every five minutes or so.

I recently received an e-mail from one such student, Paco, Paco’s e-mail brought back memories of one particular class:

It was our high school’s first year of block scheduling our classes were 80 minutes long instead of the traditional 40 minutes. On this particular day, I was being observed by two college professors. Of course, I was proud of the fact that the class was conducted entirely in Spanish and the students felt comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish.

On that day, Paco came running through the door with a toasted cheese sandwich in hand. “ Senora Mike. I’m hungry and I hope you don’t mind if I just quickly eat this great toasted cheese sandwich. ” I said, “Go ahead, Paco. ” Paco sat down and finished his sandwich, Paco had now noticed our two visitors. Of course, our two visitors noticed Paco the minute he ran through the door.

The lesson was going along quite well, and all the students were working in their groups. Suddenly, Paco raised his hand and said, “Senora, esta lloviendo en mis pantalones. ”(“Mrs. M. it is raining in my pants. ”) Now, being Paco’s Spanish teacher, I understood what he wanted. I knew that it was his way of requesting to go to the bathroom. You could just imagine the laughter from the other students.

I always wonder just how much Spanish Paco learned in that class, but I know he learned more than just Spanish based on an e-mail he recently wrote to me:

I know I was a handful but you actually cared. You knew I had potential. So even though I messed up a lot, you never gate up…I’m deeply grateful to you Senora, everything you taught me about Spanish. My attitude and life will stick with me the rest of my day…

The seats are comfortable. The walls are padded(覆软垫的) and white, and there are handles(把手) all over the place for the floating astronauts to hold.

But it’s the windows, the largest ever in space, that are the main advantage of the spaceship that Jeffrey Bezos showed off on Wednesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In a year or more—Bezos said the timing hasn’t yet been decided-his space company Blue Origin plans to begin flying tourists past the edge of space, 62 miles high, where they’ll experience the the excitement of weightlessness and view the beauty of Earth.

“Everybody says that when you go to space, it changes you, ” said Bezos, the founder of Amzon. com. “All the astronauts come back with stories like that. It’s very fantastic to see the thin layer of the atmosphere surrounding the blue planet.”

Blue Origin is one of the several companies that are seeking to lower the cost of access to space. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, for example, also plans to fly tourists to space.

Bezos said while his “only focus is people in space, ” the flight-testing program will require a great deal of effort.

“We are not racing, ” he said. “This vehicle is going to carry humans. We’re going to make it as safe as we can.”

The goal of Blue Origin, the space company Bezos founded in 2000, is to one day help millions of people enjoy their life outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Space tourism is the first step on that journey, Bezos said.

The tourist flights would require some training, he said, and be quick, just 10 or 11minutes. As many as six passengers would board the spacecraft about 30 minutes before liftoff. It would then be taken into space by a rocket, which, after they separated, would fly back and land on the ground. The capsule(太空舱) would continue climbing, allowing the passengers to get out of their seats and float without weight in the capsule for about four minutes before the return flight down.

  29. What impressed those astronauts according to Bezos’ words in Paragraph 4?

  A. The Earth’s amazing beauty.

  B. The damage to the atmosphere.

  C. The excitement of taking a spacecraft.

  D. The experience of feeling weightlessness.

  30. How does Bezos look at the development of the spacecraft?

  A. It is not a hard task for Blue Origin.

  B. It will be finished in one or two years.

  C. It must be done in a careful, unhurried way.

  D. It cannot be completed by just one company.

  31. Why did Bezos start the company Blue Origin?

  A. To make visiting space possible for everyone.

  B. To help people know about space tourism.

  C. To provide money for research on space.

  D. To protect the Earth’s atmosphere.

  32. How long will tourists experience weightlessness in space?

  A. For about an hour.

  B. For about ten minutes.

  C. For about half an hour.

  D. For about four minutes.

A new study has looked into whether social media makes users feel lonelier or if lonely people tend to turn toward social media more. It asked the question: Is it social media or social isolation(隔离)?

“ The social media craze (狂热)has helped some people but hurt some others in my opinion, ” development psychologist(心理学家) Stephanie Marcy with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles said.

Marcy was not surprised to learn that the more time young people spend on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other apps, the more they feel lonely. “Some people who are otherwise social beings are now relying too much on their screens and their iPads and their telephones and social media, ” Marcy explained. Experts said users can have thousands of followers, but that doesn’t mean they have somebody to call when they need a friend. “It’s sort of a false representation of having social connection. There are many people that have thousands of virtual(虚拟的) friends but don’t really have somebody to watch a movie with. That’s really quite sad as a social media leading to fewer friends, actually. ” Marcy said.

While the negative(负面的) influences of social media are often talked about, Marcy said it has helped some people, including those with anxiety, autism(自闭症) and physical limitations. “There needs to be a balance no matter what it is and with social media that completely applies, ” Marcy said.

The study doesn’t show whether people who are isolated are more likely to go online or whether seeing the pages of others makes people feel more disheartened.

  33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly concerned with?

  A. Young people lack real friends.

  B. The bad effects of social media.

  C. Social media are everywhere nowadays.

  D. A new kind of connection among people.

  34. What does Marcy say about social media?

  A. It is two-sided.

  B. It needs limiting.

  C. It does more harm than good.

  D. It is important to young people.

  35. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?
